You will notice, that even though each of these words start with ‘to’, you hear a ‘ta’, or ‘tu’ pronunciation instead.
これらの単語はどれも「to」で始まるが、発音は「ta」または「tu」に聞こえる。

次へ「ton」から始まる単語を見てみましょう。

tone  – [ˈtōn]
tonal – [ ˈtō-nᵊl ]

All these words start with the correct pronunciation of ‘to’ in Japanese。

Also, here are some examples of ‘to’, and ‘too’ without a N or M following them:

to – [tu̇]
too – [ˈtü]

Of course, when you pronounce トンボ in Japanese, the ‘n’ sound turns into an a light ‘m’ sound because of the following ‘bo’ sound.  This however cannot be directly translated into English without using phonetic respelling.  This applies to various other sounds in Japanese as well.  The most important sound in this case is the ‘ton’ in ‘tonbo’.  There is no debating that an accurate ‘to’ sound is required, and when put into English, no where do you see ‘tom(***)’ ever give the pronunciation of ‘to’.  Whereas, ‘ton(***)’ often gives that pronunciation.
もちろん、日本語で「トンボ」を発音すると「bo」がついているのだから、その「n」が軽い「m」に変わります。そのため、再表音式綴りに変えないと直接英語に翻訳することは出来ません。これは日本語のさまざまな発音にも当てはまります。この場合の最も重要な発音は「トンボ」の「トン」です。 正しい「to」の発音が大切という議論は起こりません。また、英語では、「tom(***)」が「to」と発音する場合はどこにもありません。 一方、「ton(***)」はその発音をよく表します。

Also the ‘bo’ sound should not be ‘bow’.  Although some KANA charts may have ん equal to ‘n’, or ‘m’.  There are no official KANA charts that ever give a lone ‘w’ appearing out of thin air.  It’s likely those who use this spelling see words like ‘rainbow’ and ‘crossbow’ and decide ‘bow’ is correct, but this is not a correct use of Romaji.  Here are some English words that end in ‘bo’:
また、「bo」という音は「bow」で書くべきではありません。 一部の仮名チャートは「n」と「m」に等しいとしても、一人で「w」が現れる公式仮名チャートはありません。この綴りを使う人は,「rainbow」や「crossbow」のような単語を見て,「bow」が正しいと判断するかもしれませんが、これはローマ字の正しい使い方ではありません。「bo」で終わる英語の単語を次に示します。

gazebo – [gə-ˈzē-(ˌ)bō]
gumbo – [ˈgəm-(ˌ)bō]
hobo – [ˈhō-(ˌ)bō]
jumbo – [ˈjəm-(ˌ)bō]
turbo – [ˈtər-(ˌ)bō]

This is why we use ‘tonbo’ here on this website; it is the correct way to spell it for native English speakers to most accurately pronounce it the same way Japanese speakers do.  It’s not perfect, but it’s the closest achievable without phonetic respelling.
それだから、このサイトでは「tonbo」を使うのです。アメリカ人が日本語スピーカーと同じように正確に発音できるように綴るのが正しい方法です。 完璧ではありませんが再表音式綴りなしには出来ません。
