Japan reaches 10 million visitors in first six months

The number of overseas visitors to Japan has been increasing at a faster pace than record-breaking last year, with more than 10 million coming to the country in the first six months of this year, sources said Tuesday.

It took about seven months to reach the 10 million threshold in 2015 when a record 19.74 million foreigners visited Japan. If the number increases at the current pace, it is likely the annual figure will top 20 million this year, the sources said. The tourism boom has continued in Japan, with the monthly number of overseas visitors hitting a record 2.08 million in April on the back of the popularity of cherry-blossom viewing. Also encouraging tourism are increased airline routes to Japan, the relaxation of visa requirements for Southeast Asians and expanded tax breaks for tourists.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government has placed sightseeing as one of the pillars of the nation’s economic growth strategy, setting a target to boost the number of annual overseas tourists to 40 million in 2020 when Tokyo hosts the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
